Independent production company KATLZ RIGA promoting new drama texts from Belarus, Ukrainian and exiled Russian authors

The main idea that the KATLZ company promotes is the use of today's dramaturgy and new texts created in recent years by authors from different countries - Belarus, Russia and authors who were forced to leave their countries due to persecutions, as well as Ukrainian authors creating new wartime plays.

KATLZS will open the 2023-2024 season with a reading of a documentary play “Baggage stories” written by a group of Latvian actors and Ukrainian actress Vishna Vishneva. The play is  about the experiences of Ukrainian refugees in 2022. First presentation of the play happened in Piatra Neamt theater festival in Romania last September.

In early September 2023, a co-production premiered in Pleven, Bulgaria - the play “Nation of Lovers” by Mikhail Durnenkov, directed by Martins Eiche and set designer Pamela Butane from Latvia. It is based on the novel by Svetlana Alexievich.

Next, the performance “Neighbour” by Liena Šmukste (play by Belarussian playwright Pavel Pryazhko) will tour Israel.

Besides that, KATLZ is planning to present a new production in October in Riga. It is based on a  play by Belarus playwright Vlada Hmel “Everything is Normal”, which will take place in two languages - Latvian and Russian.

The plans also include creating a video version with readings of plays published in a collection “A Dictionary of Emotions In a Time of War” (USA) presented by Latvian actors in English language.

The repertoire of KATLZS this autumn consist of four plays:

1) “TWHYS/The War Hasn’t Yet Started” by Durnenkov (premiered in 2018);

2) “Saules Linija/Sun Line” by Vyrypaev (premiered in 2021);

3) “Kaimins/Neighbour” by Pryazhko (premiered 2022);
