Discussion
Discussion: “No Time for Drama”
Time: November 6, 15:00–17:00
Venue: Latvian Academy of Culture, Theatre House “Zirgu pasts”, Karamazovu Hall
Why is it important to create new dramatic works today when there are already so many outstanding plays in the world? What paths can new writing take from the playwright’s initial idea to the stage, and what happens to a text once it enters the theatre?
In this discussion, performing arts professionals from across Europe will explore the process of creating new dramatic works and the challenges that come with it. Is a newly written play ever truly ready to be staged, or can and should it still be changed? What happens when a playwright fails to finish a script on time, or when a theatre suddenly realises that a play is not the right fit after all? And how can we find a balance between the playwright’s vision, the theatre’s needs, and the unpredictable nature of the creative process?
The discussion will reflect on the importance of new writing in contemporary theatre, its risks and possibilities, and why it is worth continuing to create new stories rather than relying solely on established works.
The discussion will be held in English and moderated by playwright Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce.
